Preparing...

rain 2 °C

Hello all you beautiful people!
I wasn't so keen on starting a blog, simply because I'm not so confident in my ability to keep it updated, and the quality of writing, but here goes all the same... (:
So it's what, 10 days till I leave for Ghana?!
How did that happen, the last time I had to think seriously about this was when I was booking the whole thing, months and months ago. Now here I am working out whether I need to take a rucksack (sensible) or a suitcase (easy to pack, silly idea) and what’s going to go in it. Can I learn any ‘Twi’ phrases before I go? What am I going to do with the kids out there? Do I pack summer clothes or covering up, far too hot ones?
Decisions!
However, having kitted myself up with some play-doh, colourful paper, pens, pencils, a couple of outdoor toys (Frisbee, balls) and basic English for 6-11 year olds books I’m feeling just ever so slightly better prepared. I’ve been emailing a couple of other people who’re going to be in Ghana around the same time as me which is reassuring. I reckon with a couple more research sessions online about activities for kids and Twi language basics I’ll be feeling just about there. It’s all coming so quickly!
I have a second appointment with the nurse to get a load of injections and medicines for going away. You’d think basic Malaria tablets would be enough but it’s not only essential to have a Yellow fever jab just to get into the country, but the nurse has also insisted on Hep B, Hep C, cholera, rabies (!) and meningitis! So both my left and right arms have been aching the last week or so - round two starts tomorrow.
It’s become obvious going to a country like Ghana for a month isn’t just as simple as booking plane tickets. The visa application wasn’t exactly straightforward either... But as you can imagine I’m desperate just to get out there now and start doing working and helping and meeting new people. That’s probably the main thing I’ve discovered I love most through the travelling I’ve done already, the people, in the end it’s what you go through all the planning and organising for. The experiences and inspirations and knowledge all gained from meeting people who’ve been brought up in a different place and living in a completely different way. Well. In my opinion!
For now there’s not an awful lot I can write until I get out there, but hopefully this is the beginning of an interesting (?) blog that’ll keep you all up-to-date and in touch! I’m sure the next time I write will be in Ghana, so until then much love, hope everyone is happy and had a lovely lovely Christmas,

ɘyɘ aa, yɘbehyia! (See you later!)
